So the CD for the sequel to Phantom of the Opera is out and available for purchase. I think ultimately I'll end up buying it, but right now I'm undecided. Has anyone here bought/listened to it? If so, what did you think? Also for those who are curious but aren't committed to buying it yet, you can hear little snippets of the song son amazon.com. Just search for "Love Never Dies" and click on the link for the MP3 album.

I downloaded it. The music is decent, some of the songs are pretty good, but I wasn't incredibly impressed. It sounded better than I thought it would, but it's still going to be a trainwreck.

Scoot on over to phanwank. There has been quite a few intelligent reviews posted in the last few months.

The music for me was beautiful and good (though not on a level with Phantom) but the lyrics and storyline were terrible. I was someone had told him to get a new book before he showed up on the Adelphi stage. I felt like there was a lot of potential in the music but that it was generally wasted.

Who knows, though, it may grow on me.

Some of the music is quite pretty...if you don't listen to the lyrics. Also, telling yourself that it's some other musical completely unrelated to the original might help, too.

I'll probably listen to the entire thing eventually, but right now I'm dreading it. So far I've heard "Till I Hear You Sing" (pretty music, lousy lyrics), the title song (tedious music, lousy lyrics), and "Beauty Underneath" (out-of-place wtf music, lousy lyrics with uncomfortable pedophilia implications). I tried listening to "Beneath a Moonless Sky" but had to stop because I was laughing so hard at the "And I touched you! "And I held you!" bit. And these are supposed to be the good songs! Heaven help us.

Yeah, I was also laughing out loud at'Moonless Sky.' How do you go from something like 'when will the sleeping bud burst into bloom' to 'and I TOUCHED you! and I CARESSED you!' Embarrassing.

I really don't think the NYT reviewer was harsh at all (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/10/theater/10love.html?ref=theater). The lyrics are just dreadful, although some of the songs are lovely.
